Overview
Basic Philosophy of Varivas Graphite Works: "Works Limited"
"Works Limited" succinctly means "limited editions." In contemporary terms, not only paintings and sculptures but also music, comics and anime, fashion, dance, and even sports can be considered "works of art" and are part of high art and high culture.
Though one might say, "it's just fishing gear... but still fishing gear," because it is a creation and the epitome of a hobby item, fishing gear should indeed be "limited editions." The ultimate goal of Varivas Graphite Works is to elevate fishing and fishing gear to the stage of high art and high culture.
The Sentiment Behind "Works Limited"
The rods we create are exposed to the challenge of maintaining "originality" from the moment they are produced. Yukio Mishima once wrote, "What has been expressed is no longer strictly mine. That is to say, individuality does not truly exist." However, it is precisely for this reason that we aspire to transcend conventional concepts of "individuality" and "originality" to reach a horizon of "unparalleled creation" with our Graphite Works rods. Simultaneously, delivering a unique rod to each and every customer is our utmost mission.
We do not wish to label Graphite Works rods as "models used by professional XX." Doing so would significantly spoil the creative imagination towards fishing and the thrill of the catch that each angler holds. The main character in this drama is always the user of the rod.
We want each user to greatly expand their wings of imagination.
To Ensure Uniqueness for Each User
A distinctive feature of the Graphite Works rods, depending on the model, is likely the handwritten model names and specifications directly on the rod. It goes without saying that handwriting distinguishes itself from printed text, with each rod bearing a subtly unique impression. In an era that values efficiency, viewing fishing rods as industrial products, this could be seen as a rebellious act. However, if one desires a truly unique handmade masterpiece, this approach could very well be considered the most logical style of creation. It's worth noting that the handwritten text is not limited to specifications alone; occasionally, one might even find quotes from Albert Camus or Akio Nosaka.
What's Needed and What's Not
It is not an overstatement to say that "the subtlety of balance" is everything in rod building. This encompasses the balance of rod action from material and taper distribution, the balance of guide diameter and weight, and even the balance of grip thickness and length, extending to the visual balance of shape and color. For example, if you disassemble the TRD-96FC-HRX, it breaks down into about 60 parts, each with its own meaning and role. During use, nearly a thousand casts can be made in a day, each involving intense flexing. If all these parts do not function together as precisely as a fine watch, the system may fail early on.
Conversely, there's an old saying that "the art of making things is a gift of subtraction." By rigorously eliminating any unnecessary decoration, a rod can truly blossom into its full potential functionality. In essence, a Graphite Works rod embodies the principle of "no more and no less."
