TULALA Groovy 70S
Overview
2-Piece + Grip PE Setting Ultra-Light Spinning Rod
Positioned as a reliable ultra-light rod, the original Groovy 70HS-L and 80T-L (by Extreme Co.) have long been popular for use in streams, ajing, and mebaring. The TULALA team has now adapted this standard model with a “fly-tech” touch, introducing a 2-piece + grip and PE setting design for enhanced portability during trips.
Finesse-Specific Solid Tip
With a standard 7-foot length and solid tip, the rod is designed for finesse fishing, providing delicate control and maneuverability. It is ideal for light games like using 1g jig heads or 3g plugs, recommended for more subtle fishing compared to the Groovy 80S.
The rod’s belly to butt section maintains just enough stiffness without being overly soft, making it effective for deeper-range worming without strain. Additionally, it offers enough butt power to handle sudden larger fish, making it a versatile standard light game rod. It’s perfect for those spontaneous trips where you want to drop by a waterfront whenever the mood strikes.

Staff Comment
The concept is street fishing. Inspired by the European style of urban fishing for perch and zander, this rod is perfect for targeting fish in urban waterways or harbor lights. Efficient mobility is key in these environments, and transport options like trains and bicycles are essential. The rod’s 2-piece and detachable grip design ensures it’s compact enough for easy transportation, even by plane.
The 70S tip is delicately crafted with ajing in mind, and the 80S is designed for mebaring. While the tip may not differ much from other brands, the rod’s unique balance allows you to hold it firmly, even when battling large fish like pike or kilo-class fish. The secure feel of the rod under pressure is comparable to a mainline trout rod, allowing you to focus solely on managing line tension during fights.
Guide Setting
The guides are set low-angle with small-diameter, multiple guides to maximize casting distance with PE lines and reduce issues. Despite the Alconite material of the main guide, individual load is minimized, resulting in performance that rivals higher-end models, all while keeping the price accessible.
Note: The top guide, which is prone to impact from walls and other obstacles, is made of SiC (Silicon Carbide).
Groovy Story
The original Groovy series was developed by the bait masters of Toyama Prefecture, where medium-to-large-sized kelp bass (Kijihata) thrive. In ultra-light games like ajing or mebaring, unexpected encounters with Kijihata often made landing fish difficult. This led to the desire to create an ultra-light rod that could handle sudden strikes from Kijihata, resulting in the birth of the affordable, 2-piece Groovy series with a sensitive tip and strong butt.
The Groovy series featured two models: the 70HS-L with a soft tip for ajing, and the 80T-L with a dry tip for mebaring. A model change later lightened the grip, improving maneuverability, but at the cost of the original concept’s elbow stability when handling large fish. The rod shifted to a fight that relied on the belly section, similar to other rods on the market.
In 2018, with the model change that accompanied the transfer of the Groovy production to a new factory, the TULALA team decided to launch their ultra-light series under the “Flytex” brand as street fishing rods. Integrating the excellent design of the original Groovy blanks, the rods were transformed into 2-piece + grip models for better portability. The PE-focused guide setup was optimized by lowering the guide feet, and the heavy grip was reintroduced for improved stability during fights, reviving the original concept of quickly responding to large fish.
This rod is designed to spread the joy of light games across Japan and the world. It’s built to be a key piece in unlocking exciting, versatile fishing experiences.
