The relationship between seawater and light

The water we drink is transparent, but when we look at the ocean in an aerial photograph, it appears blue.

This is because seawater transmits light with wavelengths of around 500 nanometers (blue), and has the property of absorbing light with shorter wavelengths (purple) and longer wavelengths (red).

In general, in the open ocean, where fish live, blue-green colors (475 nanometers) are abundant.

In murky coastal waters, blue-green light is absorbed by the water, resulting in more colors with slightly longer wavelengths, and in areas that are more susceptible to the influence of river water, there is an abundance of long-wavelength red colors.
